The Waterfront Trophy 2009-10

The Waterfront trophy final was contested on Wednesday morning of the 16th December between Maxwell Ladies C.C. and The 69 C.C. Team “1”.

This competition is for any four ladies who are members of Braehead Curling. The object of the competition is to encourage lady curlers to improve their game and have an opportunity to play against other ladies from Braehead Curling.

The format is to have two leagues with the winners and runners up going forward to a knock-out stage to determine the eventual winners.

Nine teams entered this year and the 2 leagues were split into a group of “Five” teams a group of “four” teams. The round robin league games were run between October and December. Teams in Section “A” were Duntocher Ladies, Maxwell Ladies, Rolling Stones “1” and 69 C.C. “2”.    The winners of this section were The 69 C.C. “2” Team with the runners up being Maxwell Ladies. Teams is section “B” were Bearsden, Curlews, Rolling Stones “2” The 69 C.C. “1” AND Dumbreck Ladies. The winners of this section were Dumbreck Ladies and the runners up were the The 69 C.C. “1” Team.

Semi finals played on Wednesday 9th December with 69 C.C. “1” team getting the better of fellow club mates (69 C.C. “2”) by only One shot. The other semi final was won by Maxwell Ladies who beat Dumbreck Ladies by 8 shots to 3.

Teams playing in the final were as follows;-

       Maxwell Ladies;-                                          69 C.C. “1”

Valerie Lyndsay :                  Skips         Ceinwen Lombardie

       Ronnie McDonald                  3rds          Elizabeth Hall

       Liz Scott                                  2nds          Karen McMillan

       Sheila Speirs.                         Leads         Anne Lundie

69 opened up the scoring with a 1 in the first end but Valerie’s team hit back straight away with a 2 in the second end.  The gloves came off in the 3rd and 4th end with The 69 ladies picking up a 2 and then a 1 against the hammer to open up a 2 point lead going into the 5th end. Not to be outdone Maxwell Ladies got a magniciant 3 in the 5th and for the first time in the game they went into the lead. Although Ceinwin’s team were a bit dejected after losing the 3 they did come back in the 6th with a 1 to level the scores. Maxwell ladies then picked up a 1 with the hammer to go into the last end with a 1 shot advantage. Lots of stones in play allowed Valerie to guard a yellow stone lying in the four foot. Ceinwen had to use her 1st stone to take off a guard to allow her a chance with her last stone, but

Valerie played another excellant guard to block up the gap. With no realistic way in Ceiline attemped an extremely  difficult double hit to try and push a yellow onto a red stone and then onto the yellow stone in the 4ft to take the game to an extra end.  Ceinwin did manage the double hit but the angle was slightly out allowing Valerie’s team to celebrate a victory.

The 69 teams were disappointed but can be seen in the bar waiting for their “losers” drinks and certainly enjoyed playing in the competition.
