The Braehead Open sponsored by The Cardwell Garden Centre was played at intuBraehead over the past weekend with a full card of 32 teams taking part.

In what is now established as an integral part of the Scottish Curling Tour the intuBraehead event welcomed teams from the length and breadth of Scotland along with our very welcomed guests from Estonia, The Netherlands, USA, Czech Republic, England and Ireland.

The event also welcomed our current Men’s World Junior Champions and the Ladies World Junior Silver Medallists from Scotland, many thanks to Kyle and Hannah and their teams for supporting the event.

Play got underway on Friday evening and by Saturday evening the High Road last 16 play-off position’s were determined with Kyle Smith and his World Junior Champions topping Group A and Alan Hannah topping Group B. The last 16 games saw a world class comeback from Team Smith against the RCA Gold Team of Bruce Mouat. The game ended tied and resulted in a single draw shot to determine the winner. Kyle went first and covered the pin! Bruce had no option other than to repeat Kyle’s accuracy and unfortunately his draw slightly over curled and the result was confirmed with Team Smith progressing to the Sunday Play-offs.

The QF results saw wins for Team Smith, Team Vevers, Team Lill (Estonia) and Team Hannah. In the Semi Finals Team Smith saw off the challenge of the remaining ladies team of Team Vevers. Team Lill progressed in a tight game against Team Hannah.

The final game was a re-match of the final held a week ago in the Dumfries Ice Bowl with Team Smith and Team Lill facing up to determine the champion of the Braehead Open 2013. Kyle with Thomas Muirhead, Kyle Waddell and Cammy Smith started with strong intent to reverse the result from a week prior and stole singles at both the first and second ends to take an early advantage.  Team Lill with Harry Lill, Martin Lill, Siim Sildnik and Fred Pandver bounced back strongly to make 4 shots in the 3rd end and take control of the final. The Estonian Quartet never looked like loosing grip on the victory and run out 7- 5 winners to end a fabulous 10 days for them in Scotland.

Martin Lill accepted the Braehead Open Trophy and thanked the organisers for a superb event and said the past 10 days would be something he and his team would remember for ever and looked forward to coming back to Scotland to compete again.

The Middle Road Winners were Team Aitken, with the Low Road being won by Team Fowler.

Another great weekend and intuBraehead would like to thank the Sponsors, The Cardwell Garden Centre, for their continued support along with all of the participating teams and supporters for making the Braehead Open 2013 such a fabulous success.
